“Building Democracy through Transitional Justice” Panel Discussion Sunday, 1 February 2015
The Tamil Information Centre (TIC) in association with the SOAS Tamil Society is organising a panel discussion on ‘Building Democracy through Transitional Justice’ at the Brunei Gallery, School of Oriental and African Studies, Thornhaugh Street, Russell Square, London WC1H OXG on Sunday, 1 February 2015 from 2.30pm to 5.30pm
The discussion will examine the role of human rights in the transition from authoritarian to democratic forms of governance. It will analyse the politics of transitional justice at it interacts with broader processes of transition of democracy, accountability, rampant impunity, genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, conflict resolution and peace building in Sri Lanka and understand the role of various actors involved in transitional justice.
There will be renowned panellists who will set the context for discussion include Prof. Ramu Mannivannan, Head of Department of Politics and Public Administration at the University of Madras (He is the author of the Book Sri Lanka: Hiding the Elephant- Documenting Genocide, War Crimes and Crimes against Humanity, which was published by the Madras University last year); Ms. Ingrid Massage (Ingrid has worked many years for Amnesty International and is currently in the Policy Department. She has spent 12 months living in Nepal whilst working for the UN Mission to Nepal and since then has also worked with Advocacy Forum, a Kathmandu based human rights organisation); Dr Radha D’Souza (Reader in Law at the University of Westminster and a free lance writer and social justice activist)
