Brutal Assault on Sushma Ramtekke, undertrial political prisoner by Byculla District Prison staff and officials

CPDR press release - This is the most recent CPDR fact-finding report of custodial violence against women prisoners in Mumbai. It is one more in a long history of endemic and systemic violence against women in India. According to statistics a woman is raped every twenty minutes in India. India is a big country by any measure.

What is notable about rapes in India is that the victims are invariably ‘dalit’ women, or women from marginalised castes and the rapists are invariably men from upper castes. This is one reason for the high incidence of ‘gang rapes’ as opposed to individual rapes. Last year twenty gang rapes were reported in a single month in just one state, the state of Haryana, all of them against dalit women by upper caste men.
